High Definition Film Conversions from your Home Movies to Blu-Ray or Editable File

Planet Studios are specialists in High Definition (HD) film conversions to Blu-Ray or uncompressed file.

We have been offering this service for several years now, and is available for Super 8 (S8) and Standard or regular 8 (R8) film formats and produces the most vivid, crisp results for domestic film transfers currently on the market.

While we can capture your these film formats in HD and transfer to DVD, this will not allow for a HD transfer. Essentially there are two options for output of HD film transfer – Blu-Ray (BD) and an editable file format.

Blu-Ray (BD)

Blu-Ray is currently the most advanced disc based storage format available, providing support for full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution together with a stunning array of advanced features. If you would like us to provide your footage edited and ready for viewing, this is the most practical and immediately rewarding option to choose.

Blu-Ray currently comes in two formats – single layer (25Gb) and dual layer (50Gb). While the media is still somewhat expensive (although on a price per mb, actually quite comparable) compared to DVD or CD, it has dropped in price at a dramatic rate, suggesting it won’t be long before prices are similar to its low capacity predecessors. You can expect somewhere in the region of 3-4 hours of footage on a single layer with encoding optimized to an idea rate of encoding. Blu-ray is required to support H.264 AVC / MPEG4 video, along with thMPEG2 and SMPTE VC-1. The vast majority of major release Blu-Ray discs used the very efficient H.264 format, this is what we use for our Blu-Ray projects.

Hi definition super 8 and 8mm film conversion and restoration service

What can I expect on my authored Blu-Ray disc?

Our film transfers to BD are certainly considered our Rolls Royce transfer and as such bring with them a vast degree of flexibility. We offer a custom menu and chaptering option, disc and case printing tailored to your preference, however more importantly, the absolute highest level of quality encoding, editing and video output. You really can expect the best with this transfer and many of our most discerning customers will testify to this.

HD file

While BD is by far our most popular output format for HD film conversions, some clients prefer to edit and archive their footage on uncompressed file formats. We offer this service, both as a raw footage output (completely un edited with warts and all), or as a clean, colour corrected, edited and restored data file. Either way you have the option to simply archive your footage preventing further degradation of the quality (on its own or as a companion to the BD conversion), or as a base for editing, encoding and authoring your own project.

If you’d like a little more creative input or would just like to retain a greater level of control of your memories, this option is definitely worthy of consideration. We’ll output to your preferred file format (.avi, .mov etc) and will listen closely to your instructions.

Why High Definition?

It doesn’t take a psychic to predict that standard definition will soon be dead and buried. A quick look at the historic progression of formats tells us that each newly introduced video format soon leads to the demise of its predecessor. Just as domestic film formats and an array of video tape formats have come and gone, usually with each providing a new level of footage quality, so to with SD formats such as DVD. Blu-Ray delivers a stunning 1920 x 1080 pixels compared to DVDs measly 720 x 576. Perhaps not a big deal now, but with HD TV now more the norm than the exception and Blu-Ray players crashing through the $200 price barrier, there really is little reason to accept less.

Our HD transfers are priced at 55c per foot making them well within reach and ensuring your irreplaceable memories are not downgraded in the transfer process. Choose a high definition transfer and you can rest assured that your legacy can be cherished for generations to come.
